Secret Drawer - Vintage Block Quilt Along #9

Hello!
Below you will find the instructions to make the next block in the Vintage Block
quilt Along - The Secret Drawer from the Kansas City Star, circa 1930.

I love this block and I think it is my favorite so far, thought I feel that way about each of these vintage blocks : )  After completing this block you will be a Y seams expert!  The are not as hard as they look and I will give you tips for success!

OK....lets get started:

Pattern for piece B can be found [Here]

Fabric: all pieces include a 1/4" seam allowance
Cut 1 - A  4 3/4" Print Center Square
Cut 8 - B Background Fabric
Cut 8 - B Spool Fabric
Cut 4 - C  2 5/8" squares for center spool
Cut 2 - D  5 1/8" squares background fabric, then cut these squares diagonally to make 4 triangles
Cut 2 - E  3 7/8" squares background fabric, then cut these squares diagonally to make 4 triangles

Materials:
100% cotton thread
Marking pencil or pen
See thru ruler
Rotary cutting supplies

Notes:
All seam allowances are 1/4"

Tip for Cutting Piece B.
Cut 1 9/16" strips and lay piece B on the strip cutting the diagonal seam with you rotary cutter.

Create the spools:

1)  Mark the center spools C 1/4" from each edge and 1/4" from raw edge.   I like to draw a seam line and make marks for the 1/4" point.
Place B spool right sides together with C inside spools.  Pin in place
***In order to make sure both pieces are centered, I fold both pieces in half and create a crease mark.  Match the crease on B to C to insure they are placed correctly***

2) Stitch the seam, stopping 1/4" from beginning and end of seam.  If you go over the mark (like I did on the top left) use your seam ripper to remove the stitches.
Repeat for the other side.  Press seams open.

3) Place piece B - background fabric to Piece C right sides together.  Pin in place.

4) Flip over the spool and stitch the seam starting and ending at the previous stitching, 1/4" from edge.  Start 1 stitch inside the previous stitching line.  Again, if you stitch into the previous seam, use your seam ripper to remove the stitches.
Repeat for the other side.

5) Place the diagonal edges of both B pieces right sides together and pin in place.
Start stitching 1 stitch away from the previous stitching back tacking at ends.  Repeat for the other side of the spool.

6)  Press seams towards the dark pieces.
Repeat for the opposite side.

7) Your finished Spool with look like this.  Repeat steps #1-6 for the other three spool blocks.

 Assemble the block

8) Lay out your block as pictured.
Stitch together Row 1.  Stitch together Row 2.  Stitch together Row 3.
Stitch row 1 to 2.  Stitch Rows 1/2 to 3.  Attach the top and bottom corners.

Yay!!!!  you are done!!
Easy, peasy, lemon squeaky - as my 6 year old would say!  : )

If you have any questions, please leave a comment below and I will answer your questions!

Happy Sewing!

Christmas Sewing

About a year ago, Melinda from the Cocorico bee asked for Christmas themed blocks.  I made the block pictured above.  It is 12" square so all the individual stockings are fairly small at less than 4" across.

I've been wanting to make the block into a pattern (for a year) and I finally did!  You can find it in my Etsy shop Here.  I've enlarged each stocking to be 10" tall and about 5 1/2" wide. They would be a fun addition to a Christmas themed quilt or would make fun placemats.  I think I may make mine into drawstring bags and fill them with goodies for my boys! I've listed them as a set but and also have them available as single patterns.

Santa has a bigger hat and eyebrows!

The Tree pattern is unchanged...

As well as the present stocking.

I finished the last ornament in the "Trim the tree handmade ornament swap" last week.  This cottage is the "Sweet Cottage" from my mini cottages pattern.  This is my favorite one of all.  Love the pink and green color combo.

And I received the most adorable ornaments in the Trim the Tree Handmade Ornament Swap!
The hedgie is from Jodi, the star from Melinda and the Star gingerbread from Leila.

These adorable little birdies are from Leah.  The have the tiniest scarves and boots.
I am so looking forward to trimming the tree this year!

Have a lovely weekend!

Cozy Sweater Coat for Sew News

With all the holiday preparations it is always nice to do a little something nice for yourself!  How about sewing a stylish sweater coat for yourself?!  This Cozy Sweater coat is an easy sewing project,  and it is a great project if you are new to garment sewing.

I created this wool blend sweater coat for the new issue of Sew News magazine.  It is incredibly easy to make and is versatile and flattering. I used a wool and rayon blend boucle that I found at my local fabric shop.

It is also lovely made up in an interlock knit.  I made the first sample or fitting garment ("muslin") from a rayon blend interlock knit.  It is always a good idea to make a fitting garment before using the final fabric.  When I made the muslin, I ended up grading it down to a size Medium since it was fitting a size Large.
Also, make sure that the knit you use does not ravel or fray as all the edges are raw or unfinished.

I added a roll line dart where the collar folds back.  This is a technique I learned in design school which is used for tailored jackets.  It creates a nice soft neckline edge that hugs the body.

The Winter Sew News issue is packed with wonderful projects and tips.
I love the 10 easy holiday gifts.....
and this adorable dress by Beth Bradley.

I'm doing more "de-stashing"!  Head over to my Etsy shop to find some Pezzy prints, fabric packs and some rare Munki fabrics!  I'm purging the fabric stash and will be listing new fabrics over the next few weeks.

I hope you find some time to do some sewing for yourself : )

The Secret Drawer

I just received and email from a reader who asked "did you ditch the vintage block quilt along"?
I assured her I did not : )  I wanted to share that with you and apologize for the delay.  I've been working on a few paid projects as well as just taking a breather.  The Super Online Sewing Match was exhausting, and really made me think about what I want to spend my time on creatively besides spending time with my boys - big and little.

Progress has been made on the next block for the Vintage Block Quilt Along. I'm going to share "The Secret Drawer" from the Kansas City Star circa 1930.    I spent time this week figuring out the pattern and picking fabrics - love picking fabrics : ) and  (drumroll please)  There are Y seams!
Stay tuned - I am shooting for the week of Thanksgiving at the latest to finish the block, pattern and tute.

Love this version in the Japanese Book - My Favorite patterns 163.
I got mine on Etsy : )

Have a lovely night!

Mini Cottages

My involvelment in online sewing bees has declined a lot this year.  I love them but I just haven't had the time to devote to very many.  I did decide to join the "Trim The Tree Handmade Ornament Swap" - it is a fun one and gets me in the spirit of sewing for Christmas. I made house ornaments that are paper pieced with fussy cut windows and doors.

Every year I plan on finishing patterns for the holidays and this year I have the "Mini Cottages" pattern available in my Etsy and Craftsy shops.
They make great ornaments but can also be used as sachets!  I included full instructions for paper piecing the houses as well as sewing them together.

There are three in total:

The Cozy Cottage

The Sweet Cottage

and last but not least........The Petite Cottage : )

Hoping you had a fun Halloween!
